Most understand their place to be largely irrelevant. The better part refrain from making any bother of themselves at all.

Unlucky for you, I'd happily consider myself the worst part. And of course my place isn't irrelevant. Who knows, maybe the Admiral will decide to shove us together as a permanent pair. I'd have gotten off on the wrong foot if I just let you do fuck-all while we were temped.

I've yet to see much use to permanent assignments, in truth, but at least thou art acting in thine own interests in such an event. These places are but stopgaps in the event of violence or material needs on an inmate's part. Neither troubles me.

I always act in my own interests. And if my own interests happen to coincide with yours, all the better.

And perhaps you've yet to see much use to permanent assignments because you've never had one yourself. You don't know what you're missing.
